Description: Enjoy an interpretive hike guided by experts from the Altona Forest Stewardship Committee. With the forest floor open to warm sunlight, the spring ephemeral season promises a showcase of trilliums, trout lilies and other flora peeking through. Come take a walk to discover the newest flowers to show their faces to the Altona Forest. Rain or shine, please dress appropriately and wear proper footwear.

Event Name: The Basics of Vegetable Gardening

Description: Growing vegetables is a great way to connect with nature, get excercise, and eat healthy, but can also be very challenging for new gardeners. At this workshop, Toronto Master Gardeners will demystify vegetable gardening and provide practical information on planting and layout, what plants need to grow, seed-starting, soils, fertilizers, various crops and maximizing productivity. In partnership with Toronto Chinese for Ecological Living. An interpreter for translation to Cantonese will be available.

Event Name: Insects, Soil and Stream Ecology at Altona Forest
Event Date: Saturday, July 14, 2012

Description: Visit three activity stations as you hike through the forest. Examine the physical properties of soil samples and close-up viewing of roots, stems and leaves of the forest flora (bring a small eyepiece if possible). Look at the insects and evidence of insects in Altona Forest and find out how these creatures benefit the forest. Study the ecology of streams within Altona Forest and how the fish and aquatic insects interact with one another. Rain or shine, dress appropriately and wear proper footwear.
